Last weekend, my fine friends T and Y were married. They are almost the only people I’ve ever met who have managed to make a long-term, long-distance relationship work, and somehow they seem to deserve their happiness all the more richly for having worked so much harder than most to get it.

T called me a few weeks ago and asked if I might draw them a little cartoon for the back of the wedding programme. As I was agreeing, I heard Y, a passionate (some might say obsessive) aerospace industry professional, pipe up in the background. I couldn’t quite make out what she was saying, since it was drowned out by her fiancé’s laughter.

‘Sorry Jols,’ said T, ‘she’s wondering whether you can get a helicopter in it somehow.’
