About me

Hi, I’m Joly, and I live by the sea in North Yorkshire, UK.

My cottage is full of hats, books and the sorts of toys that a man of hobbies tends to amass. Tents, boots, metal detectors, kayaking gear, vintage bicycles, sketchbooks, musical instruments and home brewing kit. After all, why be one things when you could be lots of them? I’ve never managed to fit neatly into a box, and the older I get, the more I suspect I ought not to. Perhaps you feel the same way.

I’ve worked as a writer and editor for nearly twenty years, covering a remarkably mixed bag of stuff, including 17th century brewing techniques, virtual reality hiking, Viking dialect in North Yorkshire and the use of chloroform for criminal purposes. My very favourite thing is writing about travel and the outdoors, and I’ve squandered a good deal of my life wearing out boot leather in the hills.

My first novel, The Tin Face Parade, was shortlisted for the Bridport First Novel Prize in 2018. There’s also a sequel, The Porcelain Poet.
